Free Outdoor Theater Opens At Fort Greene Luxury Building Plaza

The exhibit, titled "Drive-Thru," re-imagines a drive-in theater, projecting films onto outdoor screens for passing pedestrians (not cars).

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — Brooklynites don't need a car to visit Fort Greene's recently-opened "drive-in theater."

Interdisciplinary art group Soft-Firm assembled "Drive-Thru," an outdoor theater slash public art installation, at The Plaza at 300 Ashland — a triangular outdoor space at the corner of Flatbush and Lafayette avenues connected to the luxury building by the same address.

The open air exhibit re-imagines the classic drive-in theater, instead projecting a series of films by eight local artists and cultural organization onto two enormous screens set up in the plaza for passing pedestrians through April 14.

The eight-week-long installation also includes live performances, and all of the art — from films to dance lessons — connects to Black History Month and Women's History Month, which kicks off March 1st.

The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and Valen Alen Institute, in partnership with Two Trees Management, produced the outdoor exhibit.

"Drive-Thru" is the second piece of public art set up at The Plaza at 300 Ashland, following the temporary installation of an illuminated sculpture last year.

For the best viewing experience, organizers recommend stopping by the outdoor theater starting at dusk.
