Free WiFi at Fort Greene Park Not Looking So Free Anymore

Details emerge of deal with Cablevision and Time Warner Cable to provide wireless Internet at city parks.

Turns out that free WiFi promised for Fort Greene Park won't be so free after all.

In a post Thursday, Brokelyn parsed the details of the deal between the city and Internet providers Time Warner Cable and Cablevision to provide WiFi at 32 city parks, including Fort Greene, Prospect and McCarren parks in Brooklyn.

But here's the rub: WiFi will only be free for three separate 10-minute periods per month—or as Brokelyn puts it, not nearly long enough for that outdoor Veronica Mars marathon.

After that, a day's worth of access will cost 99 cents. Time Warner and Cablevision customers will get free access all the time.

No word on exactly when the WiFi service will be available in Fort Greene. Under the terms of the deal, the Internet providers have two years to install the service.
