Documentary About Trump Travel Ban Protest At JFK Screens At BAM

The documentary will be screened the same week the Supreme Court ruled to reinstate certain elements of President Trump's controversial ban.

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — Relive the massive JFK protest against President Trump's travel ban with a new short film airing at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Wednesday.

The documentary, “48 Hours at JFK: What Comes Next,” follows the enormous two-day protest in New York City’s international airport that was spurred by a travel ban the Supreme Court just ruled to reimplement in part.

Director Micah Schaffer’s film includes interviews with detainees, lawyers and organizers who protested President Trump's executive order on Jan. 27 that barred entry to travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries.

The ban was quickly blocked by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Virginia and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, but the president has since issued a pared-down order, which the Supreme Court will review this fall.

Until then, the Supreme Court has granted the federal government permission to restrict admission to visitors and refugees from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, the court announced Monday.

And on Wednesday, BAM will air its documentary and host a discussion with panelists —including Nisrin Alamin, a Sudanese graduate student who was detained in JFK — about what it means for the future of the nation.
