Mayor Agrees to Match Up To $250K In Donations to Planned Parenthood

Move comes a day after leading breast cancer awareness organization pulls funding.

In support of a major provider of mammographies for low-income New Yorkers, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Thursday that he would match up to $250,000 in donations to Planned Parenthood.

The move comes in response to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure's decision this week to end funding grants to 10 out of 12 Planned Parenthood organizations throughout the country.

Though best known as a provider of abortions, Planned Parenthood also offers other healthcare services for women, including life-saving mammograms that can detect cancer in the earliest stages.

Komen denied caving into pressure by anti-abortion groups in its decision to end its financial support for the organization.

To combat the loss of Komen grants, Planned Parenthood created a "Breast Health Emergency Fund."
