New Myrtle Ave. Bar Celebrates March With Women Wine-makers

The bar will offer only women-made wine by the glass during Women's History Month and donate a portion of the proceeds to a women's shelter.

CLINTON HILL, BROOKLYN — A new wine and craft beer bar on Myrtle Avenue is kicking off their first few weeks open by celebrating Women's History Month.

The bar, called Tailfeather, will offer only wine by the glass made by women wine-makers throughout the month of March at its 581 Myrtle Avenue space. The new spot officially opened Feb. 2.

"We're excited to celebrate Women's History Month while giving back," co-owner Autumn Stanford said.

A portion of the proceeds, $1 from each glass and $3 from each bottle, will be donated to the Tillary St. Women's Shelter, Sanford added.

So far, their women wine-maker options have included Brianne Day, who owns her own vineyard in the Eola Amity Hills of Oregon, and Laura Brennan Bissell, who works with growers who farm organically across California.

Let’s hear it for @brianneday who is responsible for one of our most beloved wines, Tears of Vulcan (we’re down to 3 bottles !). “In 2006 Brianne Day sold everything she owned and began traveling through wine regions all over the world. Over the following eight years she visited around 80 different regions, working at wineries in Burgundy, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. During this time she re-established her home base in Oregon and worked at a number of wineries including The Eyrie Vineyards and Brooks. In 2012 she started her own winery with some Pinot Noir grapes from the 15-acre, dry-farmed Crowley Station Vineyard in the Eola Amity Hills. The inaugural vintage was only 125 cases and sold out quickly. On the strength of that single bottling she was invited to the RAW fair in London and was one of only seven American wineries mentioned in Isabelle Legeron’s recent book, Natural Wine, alongside Edmunds St. John and Arnot Roberts. All native yeast fermentations, low additions of sulfur (19-25ppm), minimal punch downs, rare pump overs, and only tiny amounts of new oak”

Tailfeather is the third eatery in the neighborhood that Sanford and her husband, Dennis Mendoza, run. The couple also owns Filipino-Tex-Mex mashup Swell Dive on Bedford Avenue and Czech pastry shop Brooklyn Kolache on Dekalb Avenue.

The new bar also hosts "Industry Nights" on Mondays with $7 organic house wines, $5 pints of Jacks Abby Lager and $6 fancy pizza bagels. On Tuesdays they do $10 wine flights and each day from 4 to 7 p.m. they have happy hour with dollar-off wine and beers, plus $5 off bottles of wine.
