Public Meeting Wednesday on Accident-Prone Barclays Center Intersection

The city will host a public discussion Wednesday on ways to improve the safety of the intersection of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues.

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — The city's Department of Transportation will host a public workshop this Wednesday focused on ways to improve the safety of the accident-prone corridor of Atlantic Avenue stretching between Flatbush Avenue and 3rd Avenue, as previously reported by DNAinfo.

The meeting will take place on August 3 at the YWCA, located at 30 Third Ave. A DOT presentation will take place from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and the workshop will run until 8 p.m.

A DOT spokeswoman said that at the meeting, agency staffers will also talk about Times Plaza — the pedestrian island between Atlantic and Flatbush — "and how its design fits into a larger network of safety improvements."

In February, an article published on the Atlantic Yards/Pacific Park Report stated that, "Improvements to some 4,530 square feet on the west side of the plaza, including planters, portable tables and chairs, and new benches, are on tap," though the site noted that no time frame for the work had been announced.

According to DNAinfo, the city recorded 150 car crashes on the streets around the Barclays Center during the first half of 2015 alone.
