SEE: Brooklyn Academy Of Music Opens First Visual Arts Gallery
A Los Angeles-based artist unveiled his first BK exhibit this week at the opening of BAM's first gallery, part of a $25 million expansion.

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — The Brooklyn Academy of Music officially opened its first visual arts gallery this week, part of a $25 million expansion that the organization completed last month.
The Rudin Family Gallery — named for donor, collector and trustee Beth Rudin DeWoody — was unveiled on Wednesday with the opening of its first exhibit by Los Angeles-based artist Glenn Kaino.
Kaino was chosen to open his first Brooklyn exhibit at the gallery by guest curator Larry Ossei-Mensah, who said Kaino's piece "When A Pot Finds Its Purpose" will serve as a call to action and inspiration for those who visit the new space.

"I’m deeply honored and grateful to Glenn Kaino for collaborating with us on the inaugural exhibition to launch the The Rudin Family Gallery at BAM Strong,” he said. “When A Pot Finds Its Purposeis a provocation that invites all who experience the exhibition to take stock and evaluate the critical issues impacting our society."
The exhibit features two pieces, one named "Spill" and the other "Blue," which explore the idea of "repotting" as a concept to challenge and question current social and political constructs, organizers said.

The gallery tops off the multi-million renovation the organization is calling BAM Strong, which connected three of its sites, made the venue more accessible and set up the 1,000-square-foot visual arts space.
The expansion connects BAM Harvey Theater, a vacant space at 653 Fulton Street and the ground-floor of 230 Ashland Place.
The venue first unveiled the plans for BAM Strong back in March after announcing the project in 2015.
BAM got ready for the upgrades, which completely renovated the historical theater, by giving their followers online a look its past since opening in 1904.
Kaino's exhibit at the Rudin Family Gallery is part of BAM's Next Wave Festival and will be on display until Dec. 15 at the 651 Fulton St. space. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday and is free to the public.
