How Brooklyn — land of cat blogs, cat ladies, lost cats, bodega cats, that shared cat life — has avoided the global cat cafe trend for this long is beyond us.
Manhattan jumped on the trend late last year, with the adorable Meow Parlour on Hester Street in Chinatown. Now, more than nine months later, Brooklyn finally gets its own spot for eating, drinking and petting cats — with a catch.
The new cafe, called The Cat’s Meow, is housed in the soon-to-open Who’s Your Doggy retail store at 354 Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene.
As such, it will only operate as a cat cafe until Oct. 24.
It’s also more of a glorified animal shelter than a place you’d want to chill for hours, according to Gothamist.
“Finding forever homes for felines who might otherwise be euthanized is the cafe’s primary goal, while selling a small assortment of (human) snacks and sodas is primarily an afterthought—sorry, but there are no cat’achinos at this new Brooklyn spot. Customers are encouraged to bring in food and coffee from either Red Lantern Bicycles or The Brooklyn Sweet Spot, but the cafe’s primary deal — $5 for 30 minutes of cat time — is the main attraction.”
The pop-up cafe is a collaboration between Who’s Your Doggy, the Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition (BBAWC) and a pet-food company called Weruva.
About a dozen cats are currently up for adoption. Gothamist posted some heart-melting portaits of a few of them over the weekend, if you’re itching for a look.
According to its website, the cafe plans to host ”author readings, movie nights, gallery shows, yoga, date nights plus interesting talks on animals from local veterinarians for pet owners, animal lovers and animal rescuers” during its month of residency.
Site administrators haven’t yet been added a full calendar of events, but encourage you to check back soon.
The Cat’s Meow will be open from Saturday, Sept. 19 to Saturday, Oct. 24. Public hours will be Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission will be $5 per half hour. Children three years old and under are free.
