Wednesday: Turn Glass Litter Into a Personal Mosaic in Fort Greene Park

You can keep your work - but a larger community mosaic made from discarded glass will be installed in the park this fall.

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — For months, volunteers and staffers from Fort Greene Park have been diligently combing the green space's grounds for discarded glass, collecting about a hundred pounds in total, including shards dating back decades.

Now, the clean-up effort is taking on a second life as a community art project.

Stage one takes place on Wednesday, June 29, when the park will host a free workshop for all ages where participants can use the glass to form small mosaics to take home.

The work will be guided by local artist Amanda Patenaude, a member of the UrbanGlass studio in Fort Greene.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the park's southwest monument wing, close to the intersection of DeKalb Avenue and Washington Park (if you have questions, you can reach the Fort Greene Park Conservancy's office at 718- 722-3218).

Then, on July 9th, those visiting the park's Greenmarket between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. will be able to give Patenaude design ideas for a large mural she'll be crafting out of the glass. The piece will be installed near the park's monument in the fall.

Clearly, Amanda can't wait:
