Wegmans At Brooklyn Navy Yard Nears Completion, Hires Employees
The navy yard already has 450 applications for jobs at the incoming grocery store, which will open next year.
FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — The Wegmans grocery store coming to Brooklyn Navy Yard might not be opening until next year, but applications for jobs at the store are already flooding in.
The Navy Yard’s employment office has been hard at work recruiting local workers for the grocery store, which will open sometime in 2019 on Flushing Avenue. A representative with the yard said 450 applications have already come in.
Many recruits have been from nearby NYCHA housing, officials with the yard said this week, including The Whitman, Farragut and Ingersoll Houses.

Most recently, the community board distributed several job openings for Wegmans, including full-time deli, customer service culinary, bakery, stocking and entry-level management positions. The flyer also outlined some upcoming application events for the jobs.
The Navy hard hired outreach staff to attend community meetings, coordinate with tenant associations, send direct emails or flyers and hold information sessions for the jobs. They have also held resume building and interview trainings to support those interested in the jobs.

Most of the 450 applications so far have come from the 10 closest zip codes to the Fulton Street store.
A representative with Wegmans said an opening date for the store has not been announced yet. The company expects to have an update on its timeline and how the project has been going in January, the rep said.
The building itself has topped out on Fulton at six stories high, though the Wegmans will occupy only the bottom two floors.
The 79,000-square-foot Wegmans is part of the yard’s extensive redevelopment of its Admirals Row and 399 Sands site. It will also include the development of 78,000 square feet of retail space, 356,000 square feet of light industrial space, and 11,000 square feet of community facility space, according to the yard.
