Woman Chases Down Thieves on Clifton Place: This Week's Police Blotter

Pursuit occurs after robbery by four teens last Friday.

This is based on information received from the New York Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

The Great Clifton Place Chase

A 30-year-old woman just robbed by four teens in the early morning hours of Jan. 13 wasn't going to take her newfound status as crime victim lying down. Instead she gave chase down Clifton from Grand Avenue past Classon Avenue. In the end, the perps got away with her backpack, wallet, bankcard and ID.

Coffee with friends turns ugly

While hanging out with friends at Benny's Dulce on Fulton Street on Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m., an unknown perp snatched a woman's purse from the counter where she was sitting. A police canvass of the immediate vicinity failed to turn up the purse. The location does have video surveillance but police were unable to review the footage. None of the victim’s credit cards were used.

"Don't be talking to your man in the house"

Police allege that Joseph Harris hit a 52-year-old woman in a residence on Park Avenue on Jan. 10 at 3 a.m. during an argument. Before punching her in the face, the man told the woman: "Don't be talking to your man in the house." Harris, 64, then followed his victim outside, where he hit her with a wooden stick, police said.

Credit card bonanza

A former resident of a Clinton Hill apartment building reported to police that multiple credit cards had been opened in her name at various stores, including Kohl's, Walmart, Macy's and Sears. The victim believes the activity began shortly after a friend picked up mail at her former address. However, police report that she also had her purse stolen in August 2010. The woman canceled all of the accounts, except for Macy's.

Fancy bike reported stolen

A man reported a white Gary Fisher speed bicycle missing on Jan. 11 after he parked it in front of Atlantic Terminal Mall at 2:30 p.m. The man told police that he chained the bike to a rack. The bike's reported worth is $1,200.

Man punched, then robbed on S. Oxford

An unknown perp robbed a 26-year-old man while he was walking southbound on S. Oxford Street talking on his cellphone on Jan. 9 at 9:18 p.m. The robber punched the man in the left cheek, giving him a bloody nose and swollen lip. The perp then made off with the man's iPhone and laptop bag.

Woman loses phone during fight with boyfriend

The boyfriend of a 21-year-old woman snatched her BlackBerry and smashed another cellphone belonging to a friend during an argument in front of 121 Dekalb Ave. on Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. The man grabbed the friend's phone when his girlfriend used it to call 911.

"I'm not going back to jail."

A 47-year-old woman on crutches had her MetroCard and Social Security card worn on a chain when a man, identified by police as Shontisha Dumas, yanked it from around her neck on Jan. 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Prince Street and Myrtle Avenue near Fort Greene Houses. Dumas, 32, then told the woman, "I'm not going back to jail." As a result of the attack the victim hurt her ankle, which was already injured by Dumas as a result of another incident. A detective assigned to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office accompanied the woman to the 88th Precinct stationhouse to make the report.

Armed robbery on Hanson and Ashland

On Jan. 10 at 10:20 p.m., an unknown perp flagged down two individuals walking southbound on Ashland Place near Hanson Place and then grabbed one of them, saying, "Give me the bag and cellphone." The robber then flashed a silver handgun, taking a pair of prescription eyeglasses, a backpack, iPhone and an unknown amount of cash from the two victims.

Cellphone thief arrested

Police arrested a 16-year-old hours after punching an individual in the face and taking a cellphone near the Brooklyn campus of on Jan. 11 at 3 p.m.

Pistol-whipping at Whitman Houses

Two men, identified by police as Wade Hayward, 20, and Tyreek Ellis, 18, approached a 27-year-old man in the lobby of 132 N. Oxford Walk at 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 11. One of the robbers then said, "Give me what you got," while the other stood watch and barred their victim's escape. One of the men then hit the victim in the face with a black firearm causing cuts, bruising and swelling. The victim fought back and got away. No property was stolen during the attack.

Mind your Momma, son

A 62-year-old woman told police that her son came over to her apartment on Clinton Avenue and took two hundred dollar bills from her purse on Jan. 11 11:25 p.m. The woman initially called the son to her residence because she said she was fearful of her husband, who assaulted her earlier in the day. She claims her son pushed her to the floor and fled the apartment.

Greene Avenue grabber

A man approached a 21-year-old woman from behind on Greene Avenue on at 11:50 a.m. on Jan. 14, grabbing her and saying, "Give it to me," before fleeing southbound down S. Oxford Street. Nothing was taken from the victim. A camera at 19 Greene Ave. may have filmed the incident.

Argument ends in injury at Atlantic Center

During a verbal altercation at Atlantic Center on Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m., an unknown perp struck a 32-year-old woman causing a cut to her forehead. The perp also tried to grab the woman's bag before fleeing in an unknown direction. The victim was taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment. 

Fort Greene Houses resident target of identity theft

After a 48-year-old Ingersoll Houses resident received a suspicious activity notice from his bank, he realized his credit card had been used at a Macy's to the tune of $539.32. The man was unsure which Macy's the card was used.

G Train iPhone snatch

A woman riding a G train stopped at Fulton Street Station had her iPhone stolen by an unknown man who snatched it and ran upstairs towards Lafayette and S. Portland avenues on Jan. 11 at 9:25 p.m.

Purse stolen at Brooklyn Hospital

After accidentally leaving her purse in 's cafeteria, a 30-year-old returned to find it missing on Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. The woman cancelled all of her cards, none of which had been used.

Target cashier caught red-handed

Security cameras caught an employee at the Target at Atlantic Terminal Mall stealing a total of $2,650 from the register from Jan. 1 to Jan. 13.

Vacant apt. trashed

The owner of a building at 71 Grand Ave. discovered that a vacant unit had been trashed, with the windows all smashed and cabinets pulled from the walls on Jan. 12. The perp(s) also smashed holes in the wall of the apartment. A neighbor said he was not home at the time and did not hear anything.

Shenanigans at Bykota Credit Union

Unknown perps entered Bykota Federal Credit Union in the early morning hours of Jan. 11, breaking the lock to a filing cabinet before tripping the alarm and fleeing. The perps, described as three black teens, entered using a key later reported missing by a Bykota employee. Nothing was removed from the location.

Nissan stolen from Washington Ave. parking space

After legally parking his 1994 Nissan Altima on Jan. 11 in front of 224 Washington Ave., the owner returned on Jan. 14 to find the car missing. Checks of local tow pounds were negative.
