Nassau Man Assaulted Woman, Threatened Her With Firearm: Police

An infant was present during the altercation, police say.

A man is accused of assaulting a woman, threatening her with an illegal handgun and resisting arrest in Nassau on Thursday.

According to authorities, Francisco Mateo, 22, of Roosevelt, was involved in an argument with a woman that became physical on Elm Street at 2:15 a.m. Police say Mateo punched the woman twice in the head and tried to remove the phone from her hand while she called 911. Mateo then displayed a handgun and threatened the woman while she was on the phone with authorities, police say.

An infant was present during the altercation, police say.

Authorities responded to the scene and began an investigation in which police say Mateo was uncooperative with and became violent. He was subdued and placed under arrest, police say.

Mateo was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree menacing, fourth-degree criminal mischief, third-degree assault, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.

He will be arraigned Friday at First District Court, Hempstead.
