UNIONDALE, NY — A new, state-of-the-art water storage tank will replace the decades-old tower in Uniondale.

It is part of the $225 million investment in the Town of Hempstead water systems, Supervisor Don Clavin announced on Tuesday.

The existing storage tank, originally built in 1955, stands at 175 feet tall and will be retiring after many years of service.

"Maintaining our drinking water infrastructure is a crucial part of protecting our Town’s public health," said Clavin. “As this water tower grows older, it requires more work and money to make sure it can continue serving its community, and it’s time for a change.

The new water tower is set to be constructed with a concrete pedestal base and a composite steel tank on top. Its steel supports will not be exposed to the elements like they are in legacy tanks, making them easier and cheaper to maintain.

The town is set to put out a bid for construction this summer and expects the construction process to take about 18 months. The tank should be fully operational by the summer of 2027, Clavin said.

"The town is dedicated to staying at the forefront of water treatment technology for the betterment of the 800,000 Long Islanders whom we serve," Clavin said.
