Garden City Firefighters, Police Rescue Cat Stuck In Tree

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Feb. 14.

Feb. 8
• Officers responded to Old Country Road to investigate a two-vehicle crash where one of the vehicles reportedly left the scene.
• Firefighters and police responded to a 7th Street business for a fire alarm and determined it was activated by construction.
• A Stewart Avenue driver was charged with unlicensed operation, suspended registration, and distracted driving (cell phone).
• A commercial vehicle driver on Cathedral Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and unsafe tires.

Feb. 9
• A person entered a vehicle parked at Adelphi University by breaking a window and stealing two laptop computers from within.
• Firefighters and police responded to the middle school for a fire alarm and discovered a burning smell in the kitchen due to a freezer issue. Students were evacuated from the school for safety reasons until firefighters could render the area safe.
• Firefighters and police responded to Stratford School for a fire alarm and determined it was an accidental activation.
• A Stewart Avenue driver was charged with speeding, passing a red traffic light, unsafe lane use, and unsafe turn.
• A Washington Avenue driver was charged with driving with a suspended license and non-transparent windows.

Feb. 10
• A company was charged with operating a truck on New Hyde Park Road while 14,000 pounds overweight.
• A driver on St. James Street South was charged with excessive speed and passing a stop sign.
• A victim’s identity was stolen and used to open two fraudulent credit card accounts.
• Officers investigated a scam report where a victim received a text message from what appeared to be her bank advising her of fraudulent activity on her account. She then contacted the phone number listed, and supplied banking information later used to illegally transfer money from her account to another person’s account.

Feb. 11
• Officers responded to New Hyde Park Road and Plattsdale Road, where a vehicle crashed into and damaged village property. Upon investigation, the driver was arrested for DWI. He was also charged with resisting arrest.
• A victim discovered his identity was stolen after being advised he had insufficient funds for a bank account he had never opened.
• Firefighters and police responded to a Meadbrook Road residence for a fire alarm and determined the cause was burnt food.
• A truck driver on Stewart Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and defective tires.
• A driver on 11th Street was charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
• Firefighters and police responded to Plaza Road for fuel in the roadway. The vehicle that caused the leak was gone on arrival. Firefighters rendered the area safe.
• A Franklin Avenue business received a telephone order for goods from someone who used another person’s credit card information. The order was cancelled.
• Firefighters and police assisted in rescuing a cat stuck in a tree on Princeton Street.

Feb. 12
• Officers responded to a 7th Street commercial building and found an open exterior door. All interior suites were checked and appeared to be in order. Building management was notified.
• Officers responded to Transverse Road, where an elderly driver accidentally drove onto a lawn and struck a house. Firefighters responded to inspect and stabilize the scene.
• Firefighters and police responded to a Princeton Road home for a gas leak. Firefighters determined natural gas was emanating from an oven and safeguarded the scene by disconnecting the gas supply.

Feb. 13
• Firefighters and police responded to the Nassau Boulevard Railroad Station, where firefighters extinguished a fire on the train tracks.
• Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a smoke condition and determined the cause to be an oil burner issue. Firefighters were able to disconnect the burner and vent the home. Medics treated the homeowner for lightheadedness.
• A victim reported the theft of financial documents mailed to her.
• A victim’s identity was stolen and used to open an unauthorized insurance account.
• A Franklin Avenue driver was charged with driving with a suspended registration and unregistered vehicle.
• A Washington Avenue driver was charged with driving with a suspended registration and defective brake lights.

Feb. 14
• A victim received a phone call from a person claiming to be a police officer who stated she was wanted on two outstanding civil court citations regarding her employment and was subject to arrest. The victim determined it was a scam and ended the call.
• Officers responded to Hilton Avenue for a railroad gate malfunction and determined the cause to be ongoing train track work.
• A victim’s identity was stolen and used to open an unauthorized debit card account.
• A Clinton Road driver was charged with driving with a suspended registration, a suspended license and defective brake lights.
