GARDEN CITY, NY — The Village of Garden City is linking back to its 19th-century roots as it works toward restoring and growing trees in the community.

At the village's board meeting last week, trustees unanimously adopted the new tree policy.

Healthy trees on village property will not be removed "unless there are mitigating circumstances," Mayor Mary Carter Flanagan said.

One reason for removal would be if the tree causes a dangerous visibility issue.

When a tree is cut down, the village requires a replacement tree "with an appropriate species to be determined by the village arborist."

As the mayor writes in her weekly newsletter, the village's trees play a vital role "in enhancing the health and quality of life of residents, and we recognize the significant environmental benefit of trees."
