Man Charged With DWI After Striking, Killing Pedestrian, 23: PD
A 23-year-old man died in the DWI crash, police say.
HEMPSTEAD, NY — A 23-year-old man died after being hit while crossing the street in Hempstead Friday night, police said.
According to Nassau County police, the incident took place at 11:40 p.m. A 71-year-old man, Jose Forero, of Valley Stream, was driving a 2023 Jeep Gladiator southbound on North Franklin Avenue in the vicinity of Centre Street when he struck a 23-year-old male pedestrian who was crossing North Franklin Avenue, detectives said.
The 23-year-old suffered severe body trauma and was transported by a Northwell Hospital Ambulance to a local hospital for treatment; he was pronounced deceased by a hospital physician, police said.

Forero, the driver of the Jeep, remained at the scene, police said. A thorough investigation determined that Forero was intoxicated, police said.
Forero was placed under arrest without incident and charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter; second-degree vehicular manslaughter, and driving while intoxicated, police said.

He was slated for arraignment on Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
