Man Gets 37 Years To Life In Prison For 2018 Nassau Murder
Jamik Cannon was found guilty of the murder of Demetrius Winfield in a brazen daytime shooting in 2018.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — A Hempstead man was sentenced to 37 years to life in prison on Friday for the 2018 murder of a man in the village.
Jamik Cannon, 28, was convicted on May 14 of second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
“This defendant and his accomplice turned a residential street in Hempstead into a killing field at 11 o’clock on a Friday morning,” said Acting Nassau County District Attorney Joyce Smith. “Fifteen gunshots over a petty argument took Demetrius Winfield’s life, nearly killed his friend, and terrorized the Hempstead community. We will continue to vigorously prosecute gun violence and its aftermath to the fullest extent of the law.”
