Woman Stole Multiple Wallets From People At Garden City Stores: Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Feb. 21.

Feb. 15
• Officers investigated a road rage incident on Stewart Avenue.
• A Franklin Avenue driver was charged with driving with a suspended registration and unlicensed operation.
• Firefighters and police responded to a Euston Road residence for a burning odor and determined the cause was a defective light ballast in the basement. Firefighters rendered the area safe.
• Officers investigated a possible assault case and determined that the incident occurred in New Hyde Park. Nassau County police were notified.
• Officers responded to the Residence Inn for a taxi-fare dispute.

Feb. 16
• Upon investigation of a vehicle stopped and interfering with traffic on Franklin Avenue, officers arrested a 29-year-old man for DWI, impeding traffic and unlicensed operation.
• Firefighters and police responded to Meadow Street for a natural gas odor. Firefighters determined that gas meter readings were negative.
• A company’s check was stolen from the mail, altered and cashed.
• A Stewart Avenue driver was charged with driving with a suspended license, a suspended registration and tinted windows.
• A truck driver on Clinch Avenue was charged with disobeying no commercial vehicle signs and multiple equipment violations.

Feb. 17
• Upon receiving a call for an erratic driver striking a curb, an officer observed a vehicle on Hilton Avenue with two damaged tires unable to maintain its lane of travel. The vehicle was stopped on 7th Street, where the subject was subsequently arrested for DWI, consuming alcohol while driving, unsafe tires and unsafe lane usage.
• A victim’s identity was stolen and used to open an unauthorized bank account.
• Officers and Tree Department personnel safeguarded Merillon Avenue due to a large fallen tree limb blocking traffic.
• A Stewart Avenue driver was charged with excessive speed and passing a red traffic light at Edgemere Road.

Feb. 18
• Officers responded to Old Country Road for a fallen tree limb partially blocking a traffic lane and the sidewalk.
• A Stewart Avenue driver was charged with driving with a suspended license, a suspended registration and fraudulent license plates.
• Officers investigated a report of a man urinating on a Garden Street lawn.

Feb. 19
• Officers responded to a report of a driver and a passenger fleeing the scene on foot after their vehicle crashed into and damaged a light pole on Franklin Avenue. Upon investigation, officers stopped the individuals and arrested the 26-year-old driver for felony DWI (two prior DWI incidents), first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation (license suspended for prior DWI offenses) and leaving the scene of an accident.
• Garden City detectives arrested a 55-year-old woman for the theft of wallets from victims inside two local stores and using credit cards from the wallets to make purchases. The woman was charged with four counts of grand larceny, two counts of identity theft and two counts of possession of stolen property.
• Walgreens reports that a man entered the store, stole multiple items and fled.
• Starbucks reports that a man entered the store, stole an item and fled.
• An Old Country Road driver was charged with unlicensed operation, unregistered vehicle and uninsured vehicle.
• Unknown markings were found on a St. James Street North driveway.

2/20/23
• Graffiti was found on the walls of a private parking garage in Parking Field 12.
• Surveillance cameras showed a person checking car door handles on John Street. There is no loss reported at this time.
• A vehicle reportedly left the scene after striking and damaging an unoccupied vehicle parked on the Adelphi University campus.
• A Clinton Road driver was charged with driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and excessive speed.
• A Stewart Avenue driver was charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
• Officers responded to the Hilton Avenue railroad crossing for a railroad gate malfunction.

Feb. 21
• A witness reported that an unknown white box truck struck and damaged a Franklin Avenue railroad gate.
• An Edgemere Road driver was charged with driving with a suspended license and non-transparent windows.
• Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a carbon monoxide alarm. Firefighters conducted meter testing but found no gas.
