GC Just Wants to Have Fun: The ‘80s vs ‘90s Show at Downtown Sounds
Downtown Sounds got off to an epic start with a battle of the decades by the '80s vs '90s band.
Downtown Sounds got off to an epic start with a battle of the decades by the ‘80s vs ‘90s band. People were on their feet dancing with themselves and with friends, vendors lined up down School Street, and restaurants stayed open late.
The concert started with the Teen Showcase! Cast members from the Glen Cove High School Masquers performed a selection of songs from this year’s performance of “Chicago.” The Teen Showcase highlights local teens and their talents in the arts, performing as opening acts to the Downtown Sounds concert performers.
The ‘80s vs ‘90s Show is a five-piece band with both female and male vocalists, members of the band have both Broadway and national touring experience. The band has rocked many stages near and far with highlights including private events for: U.S. Congress (multiple events), White House Correspondents Dinner NBC Afterparty, Kelley Blue Book/NY Auto Show (multiple events), NBC’s Willie Geist, Jimmy Buffett, Guy Fieri – NYC Wine and Food Festival , and Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

The event was full of family fun. Chalk drawings decorated the street, competitive games of connect four and cornhole (provided by Noble Savage and located down Glen Street) were played, and fun faces were painted by Joanie Baloney free for concertgoers. Face painting will be available at the concerts again August 1 and 29. During the concert people could get information and freebies from the vendors: Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Max Chiropractor, and North Shore Village Theatre.
Local restaurants stayed open late for quick bites. Henry’s cooled people down with ice cream, Scoop N’ Fruit had tasty treats, Green Eats fueled the dancing with healthy meals, Tocolo served up fresh and quick snacks on their taco cart, and people could grab coupons inside the Downtown Sounds program for Mad Chicken and Noble Savage.

To close the first Downtown Sounds concert the band let everyone decide: ‘80s or ‘90s. The answer was clear, the ‘80s won. The last song had concert goers thinking say it ain’t so, yelling for an encore.
Although the concert had to come to an end make sure to hold on to that feeling because the Downtown Sounds concert series returns Friday with a classic and modern rock performance by The Seismatics. Don’t you forget about the Teen Showcase before the concert. The Jazz Hands Children’s Theatre will be performing songs from their upcoming production of “High School Musical” at 7pm.
The Downtown Sounds concert series takes place every Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Village Square. Thank you to Vito’s for being July 11’s restaurant sponsor.
