Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club recognized Alejandro V. and Claire L. as the Youth of the Month for April.
Junior Youth of the Month, Alejandro V., is already showing signs of becoming a strong and positive leader at just nine years old. A third grader who joined the after-school program in 2023, Alejandro has quickly become a well-liked and respected member of the Club community. His favorite subject in school is science, which speaks to his curiosity and interest in how things work. But it is his dream of becoming a police officer that really reflects his personality. Staff members say Alejandro is often seen encouraging his peers to do the right thing and leading by example. Whether it is helping friends with a task or making thoughtful decisions, he consistently shows maturity and kindness. Alejandro also enjoys creative activities. He plays the recorder, drums, and trumpet, and he draws in his free time. A fan of the Magic Tree House book series by Mary Pope Osborne, he blends his imagination with his love of learning. Basketball is his favorite sport, and when it is time to relax, he enjoys video games and working through challenges on Khan Academy as part of his academic enrichment at the Club. Alejandro has made many friends during his time at the Club and appreciates the sense of community it brings saying “What I like about the Club is how people treat me. Everyone is respectful, and I have made a lot of friends.”
Senior Youth of the Month, Claire L., age 11, has been a familiar and joyful presence at the Club since 2021. A daily attendee with no days off, Claire brings energy, curiosity, and a passion for learning to everything she does. A fifth grader, her favorite subjects in school are math and science, both of which fuel her long-term goal of entering the medical field. When she is not solving math problems or exploring science concepts, Claire enjoys getting creative. She plays the cello but dreams of learning the drums, and she loves drawing, coloring, and designing with technology. Action games, electronics, and video games are among her favorite activities, and she also likes to stay active by playing soccer. At the Club, Claire takes homework seriously and uses her time wisely. She completes most of her assignments during program hours but prefers to do her reading homework at home, where she can enjoy a quieter space to focus—especially when reading her favorite Dog Man book series by Dav Pilkey. This balance shows her growing sense of responsibility and commitment to her education. For Claire, the Club is more than just a place to go after school, it is a second home filled with friends, mentors, and unforgettable experiences. “My favorite part of the Club is spending time with my friends. I still think about our summer trip to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, it was so much fun!” she said enthusiastically.
