Glen Cove ESL Students Analyze The Work of Dr. King
The classroom activities are focused on deductive reasoning and reading comprehension.
Glen Cove High School students in Cheryl Chase’s ESL IV class are studying and examining Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”
As part of their studies, students listened to a recording and read an adapted version of the letter. Prior to being introduced to the letter, the class watched video footage of the March on Birmingham, Alabama.
According to Chase, the classroom activities are focused on deductive reasoning and reading comprehension. They also encompass the themes of non-violence, equal rights and justice.

“It’s important that students are aware of American history,” Chase said. “It wasn’t that long ago that things were different and there’s still a long way to go.”
