Glen Cove's Recreation Director Makes It 'Great Place For Everybody'

GLEN COVE, NY — Without community leaders, Glen Cove wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions. This submission comes from Maggie Warner, who nominated Spiro Tsirkas.

How do you know the community leader? We work in the same department for the City of Glen Cove

What does the community leader do? Spiro is the director of recreation for the City of Glen Cove and the director of youth services at the City of Glen Cove Youth Bureau.

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored? As Recreation Director and Youth Bureau Spiro creates and oversees year-round programs for community youth and adults. These programs include summer camp, after-school programs, basketball, swimming, zumba, tai chi, yoga, tennis, summer youth employment, mentoring, community gardens, school supplies and toy giveaways, Spring egg hunt, free theatre in the park. He has also undertaken improving our eight field athletic stadium and our soccer field, raising funds to install sprinklers and bleachers. He oversees our beaches and boat ramp. As chair of the Recreation Commission he helps regulate local baseball, softball, and soccer for kids and adults as well as junior football. There is not a family or organization in Glen Cove that he has not enriched or assisted in some way. He never says no, rather how can we get this done.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the community hero? He loves Glen Cove and spends his days, nights and weekends making it the great place it is for everybody.
