The alleged theft, identified as Charles Bowen, was found to be in possession of the items from the vehicle as well as wrapped Christmas gifts that had just been stolen from another vehicle in the area, police say.

"Obviously we don't recommend homeowners to give chase to suspects," Det. Lt. John Nagle said in a statement. "Call the police and give the best description that you can and let the police intervene."

Bowen, who told police he was homeless, was charged with criminal mischief, two counts of possession of stolen property and petty larceny. He was arraigned in District Court in Hempstead and is currently being held on $300 bail.

"During the holiday season, make sure to lock your vehicles and don't leave gifts or other valuable open to view inside your vehicle," Nagle said. "If you must keep a gift inside your vehicle keep it in the trunk out of view of anyone who might be passing by."
