Hydrofracking Wastewater Questions Loom

How would you feel about hydrofracking's by-product being treated in Glen Cove's sewage treatment plant?

Glen Cove's water treatment plant is one of a handful in the state which are capable of treating the wastewater produced by hydrofracking, where natural gas is released from bedrock using chemically treated water.

State Senator Carl Marcellino , saying he does not think the prospect is a realistic possibility. Residents at that meeting raised a number of concerns about the idea's viability and the threat posed to the environment.

The issue continued to generate controversy as county executive Edward Mangano proposed a public-private partnership for Nassau's water treatment facilities which would have allowed a profit to be made on the county's water treatment. The plan was rejected by the Nassau Interim Finance Authority on Thursday, but the prospect highlighted the implications such a deal might have were hydrofracking wastewater treatment to become a commodity in the future.
