GLEN COVE, NEW YORK – New York State Assembly Judiciary Chairman Charles Lavine issued the following statement in response to a ruling by the New York State Court of Appeals upholding the constitutionality of a law which will move local elections to even years:

“The Even Year Elections Law will increase voter turnout. Americans of good faith believe that more people should participate in democracy by voting. As former Chair of the New York State Elections Law Committee, I knew that the Republican challenge to the law was without any merit and was destined to fail. New York's highest court has now ruled that the law is constitutional. Bruce Blakeman and the Republicans on our county legislature voted to spend half a million dollars to sue the state over the law. The legislature's Democrats voted not to waste that money. Nassau taxpayers are now on the hook for $500,000.00 in needless legal fees to help suppress the right to vote. Shameful.”
