LI Pols Support Harris; Quickly Rises To Party's Presumptive Nominee

The vice president announced Monday night that she had secured enough delegates to become the Democratic standard-bearer at Aug. convention.

LONG ISLAND, NY — In less than two days after President Joe Biden announced he would drop his bid for a second term, Democrats quickly coalesced around Vice President Kamala Harris, making her the party's presumptive nominee for president ahead of next month's convention.

Long Island Democrats joined the groundswell of support for Harris.

Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY 03) said on X: "The response to Kamala Harris’ historic candidacy has been overwhelming and I add my name to the chorus of endorsements. I look forward to working with her on common-sense solutions to secure the border, reform immigration, and reduce the cost of living for Americans."

John Avlon, who is looking to defeat incumbent Nick LaLota and turn the 1st Congressional District blue, said: "The contrast between the dynamic former prosecutor and the aging convicted criminal at the top of our respective tickets could not be clearer.."

In the 4th Congressional District, Laura Gillen will take on Republican Anthony D'Espositio in November. A spokesperson for Gillen said she "will be supporting VP Harris."
