Northwinds Symphonic Band: An Afternoon of Musical Magic!
Broadway and Movie Classics Performed with Great Success at Sands Point

The Northwinds Symphonic Band captivated the audience on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at the Sands Point Preserve’s Black Box Theatre with their concert titled “Broadway, Movies, and Light Classics”.
Under the direction of conductors Helen P. Bauer and Brandon Bromsey, the band delivered a dynamic and varied program featuring instrumental and vocal pieces from beloved movies and Broadway productions, as well as timeless classics by composers Johann Strauss, George Gershwin, and Leroy Anderson.
Highlights of the performance included selections from South Pacific, The Producers, Down With Love, The Sound of Music, and works by the acclaimed film composer John Williams. The band also performed Raymond Osnato’s Parade Day in New Orleans. The percussion section gave a rousing rendition of Thunder and Lightning from the Broadway show Riverdance, arranged by local composer Carl Strommen.
The concert also showcased vocal performances by renowned Broadway stars Karen Murphy and John Preator and featured solos by talented Northwinds musicians.
Helen Bauer commented on the venue, saying, “The Sands Point Preserve is not only a wonderful performance venue but one of the gems of the North Shore of Long Island. Located on the Guggenheim Estate, it embodies the elegance that defined the Gold Coast Period of the early 20th century. The 216-acre park is a wonderful destination for families and offers year-round educational and cultural programs. We at Northwinds feel fortunate to be one of the cultural programs offered at the Preserve twice a year. It was wonderful to have a SRO audience at our last concert in June.”
The band's next concert will be on November 17 and will be a “Salute to Veterans.” For more information, call 516-375-4957, or email helenpbauer@gmail.com.
