ROSLYN, NY — Roslyn Village's iconic landmark, the Ellen E. Ward Memorial Clock Tower, will get a needed sprucing-up soon, thanks to the efforts of a Roslyn Heights Boy Scout.

The Roslyn Times reported that Roslyn Village approved Henry Woytysiak's proposal to repair a historic cannon that sits near the tower, along with the surrounding grounds, as his Eagle Scout project.

He said the clock tower fit the bill for a project that would serve the community.

Woytysiak and other scouts plan to clean and repaint the historic cannon.

According to the Roslyn Landmark Society, the cannon came from the Spanish sloop Jorge Juan, which sunk off Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The cannon was then given to the commander of the U.S. ship that recovered it, Aaron Ward, who retired to a Roslyn estate and placed the cannon on his front lawn.
