School District Head Issues Statement on Bus Accident

Locust Valley Central School District's superintendent issued a statement Tuesday expressing sadness over the loss of one of the district's bus drivers in .

"Our thoughts are with all of those who were involved in this tragic accident," said Anna Hunderfund. "We send our sincere sympathy to Mr. Guevara’s family and friends during this difficult time."

was a driver for the district for the last six years, she said.

A makeshift memorial was created at the scene in the days since the crash.

According to a Newsday report, varying heights of four railroad trestles in Nassau County's northeast corner make finding a route through the area a challenge for truck drivers.

The truck that hit the trestle was a cement mixer owned by Nicolia Ready Mix. It was about 13 feet in height - nearly two feet over the posted 10-foot, one-inch height of the bridge.

Its driver may have been lost, Newsday quoted the company's owner as saying. He said the driver had a clean driving record throughout his four years with the company.

The school bus had been returning from a day camp at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. It was carrying four students and a bus monitor, Hunderfund said, all of whom were injured but with nothing life-threatening. 

The 44-year-old cement truck driver was also injured. He was treated and released following the accident. His name has not been released.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
