Sea Cliff Sewer Project Gets Underway; Timeline Released

An $8-million sewer infrastructure project is underway in Sea Cliff. Here's when officials expect it will be finished.

SEA CLIFF, NY — Work has begun on an $8-million sewer upgrade project in Sea Cliff in which thousands of feet of new, sanitary sewers will be installed under parts if the village.

Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton met with village officials last week to mark the initial stages of the project, which calls for nearly 5,900 feet of sewers under portions Prospect, 12th and Summit Avenues, as well as Fairview Place. DeRiggi-Whitton and village officials discussed the project with workers installing the sewers, which will link the new infrastructure to the Glen Cove Wastewater Treatment Plant using an existing gravity sewer under Carpenter Avenue in nearby Glen Cove.

DeRiggi-Whitton helped broker a deal between municipalities that allowed Sea Cliff to tap into about $4 million in county capital plan money for the project. The funds will supplement $3 million in state money and about $1 million in village funding.

Village officials expect the Prospect Street portion of the upgrades to be finished by the end of the summer. The remainder are expected to be finished by March 2021. The village is working with area utilities to make the project efficient and minimize disruption for residents and businesses.

Smart investments in sewers result in "tremendous" environmental, economic and quality-of-life improvements for residents and small businesses, DeRiggi-Whitton said in a statement.

"I am glad to see that this work is underway, and am grateful to have had this opportunity to facilitate a productive partnership between the village and Nassau County," she said.

Sea Cliff Mayor Edward Lieberman thanked DeRiggi-Whitton for her efforts, calling her leadership in the project "outstanding."

"Her persistence in spearheading efforts in obtaining funding for not only the original Sea Cliff Avenue sewer line, but also the present project to hook up that line, is a testament to her dedication to our village and its environmental well-being," Lieberman said in a statement.
