Suspect In Fatal Stabbing Of LIU's Clayton Beathard Arrested

Beathard was attempting to protect a female friend from a man's "unwanted advances" when he was stabbed, police say.

NASHVILLE, TN — Police say that have caught the man who stabbed Long Island University football player Clayton Beathard to death outside a Nashville bar early Saturday.

Michael D. Mosley, 23, will be charged with two counts of criminal homicide and one count of attempted criminal homicide, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department. Mosley, who surrendered after authorities surrounded a home in Cheatham County, Tennessee Wednesday afternoon, is also accused of killing 21-year-old Paul Trapeni III.

Beathard, 22, and Trapeni, as well as a third man who suffered minor injuries, were stabbed to death around 2:50 a.m. Saturday in what authorities have said was an argument about a woman that began inside the Dogwood Bar and turned physical outside.

Mosley had made unwanted advances toward the woman who was with the victims, MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron said, according to an ABC News report.

Mosley's criminal history is extensive and includes aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated burglary and drug-related arrests and convictions, The Tennessean reported.

Beathard, a native of Nashville, was a junior at Long Island University, where he was majoring in sports management and played on the university's football team as quarterback for seven games this year before being sidelined with an injury. He transferred to LIU from Iowa Western Community College.

He is the brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard, the son of country songwriter Casey Beathard (whose hits included Kenny Chesney's "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems") and the grandson of Pro Football Hall of Famer Bobby Beathard. His brother Tucker is a country music singer and songwriter.
