Teen Rescued From Capsized Sailboat In Hempstead Harbor

The boy was examined for onset hypothermia​.

A teenager was rescued from a capsized sailboat on Saturday in Hempstead Harbor, police say.

Nassau County Police Department Marine 8 received a distress call for a capsized sailboat with a person in the water in Glen Cove at 1:58 p.m. The 15-foot Laser sailboat was found capsized with a 15-year-old boy on top of the hull.

Three police officers were able to remove the teen from the water and bring the sailboat upright. Police say the teen was in the water for about 30 minutes. He was taken to Brewer’s Marina in Glen Cove where he was examined by the Glen Cove Fire Department for onset hypothermia. The boy and his mother, who arrived to the scene, refused further medical attention. The 15-year-old was wearing a personal flotation device when in the water, police say.

At the time of the rescue, police say winds were blowing steady at 20 knots gusting in excess of 25 knots at high seas.

The sailboat was taken to shore and released to the owner.
