What's Open, What's Closed on Martin Luther King Jr., Day

Most public and financial institutions are closed Monday.

Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a national holiday, commemorating the life of the famed Civil Rights leader who was gunned down in Memphis in 1968.

Since 1986, the third Monday of January has been a National Holiday to observe Dr. King’s birthday. The day is observed by many as a time to volunteer and honor basic human rights of all people.

All State, Federal and local municipal offices are closed, but national, state and local parks are open.

U.S. Post offices are closed and there is no postal delivery.

The Long Island Railroad will operate on a modified holiday schedule with 32 extra trains on the Babylon, Montauk, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma branches. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Public Schools are closed.

Banks, stock market and other financial institutions: Closed.

Retail stores: Virtually all retail stores are open for their normal hours, including grocery stores and drug stores.
