Arrest Made Following Fatal July Shooting of Red Hook Houses Resident: NYPD
Jahiem Smallwood, 24, was shot on Bush Street on July 19, according to the NYPD. He died the next day.

RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — A man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the July shooting death of Red Hook Houses resident Jahiem Smallwood, police said last week.
After responding to a 911 call that came in shortly after 8 p.m. on July 19, police found Smallwood outside 75 Bush St. with gunshot wounds to his lower torso and body, according to the NYPD.
He was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he died the next day.

On Friday, police announced the arrest of another Red Hook man, 24-year-old John Lawton, in connection with the shooting.
Lawton was charged by police with murder and criminal possession of a firearm. He had yet to be arraigned as of Tuesday morning, according to city documents.

Smallwood was killed in the NYPD's 76 precinct, which patrols Red Hook. Through Oct. 23, the 76th had seen a dramatic 25 percent drop in major crimes collectively compared to the same period last year, according to official police statistics. Eight shootings with 11 victims had been recorded in the precinct through Oct. 23, compared to 10 shootings with 16 victims during the same period in 2015.
