Brooklyn Community Board ‘Considering’ Action Against District Manager Charged With Stalking Ex

Here's what the board's chair said about its embattled district manager, Craig Hammerman, on Wednesday.

GOWANUS, BROOKLYN — Brooklyn Community Board 6 is "considering" action against long-time district manager Craig Hammerman, who was arrested and charged recently for harassing and stalking his ex-girlfriend, according to the board's chair.

The chair, Sayar Lonial, also confirmed that Hammerman would be taking a leave of absence in a statement to the board's general meeting Wednesday night. Hammerman did not attend Wednesday night's meeting of the full board.

The closed-door Finance, Personnel and Law Committee has met three times, Lonial said, and is "considering what, if any, actions should be taken." It has been in touch with the city's Law Department, Lonial said, which is also reviewing the charges against Hammerman.

The board "is reviewing all issues with regards to the district manager of Brooklyn Community Board 6, including how these incidents affect job performance, in addition to reviewing job performance in general," Lonial said.

He asked board members "to do whatever you think is right, for not only yourselves but the board at large."

Hammerman's attorney, Joyce David, told Patch by phone Wednesday night that Hammerman's leave from the board is for medical reasons and declined to get any more specific.

"Obviously, this is a very stressful situation," David said. "It's hard to deal with, having this made public and splashed across the headlines. It’s a very embarrassing situation for him. Unfortunately, the presumption of innocence sounds very nice but most people unfortunately don’t get it. They just don’t."

David has staunchly denied the charges Hammerman faces, which were brought by the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.
