Here's Your Chance to Question City Officials About Proposed Brooklyn Streetcar Routes

A meeting on the planned light-rail system is scheduled for Nov. 17 in Red Hook.

RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — This Thursday, Community Board 6 residents will have their first chance to question city officials on a recently released "short list" of possible routes for the still-theoretical Brooklyn Queens Connector (BQX).

The proposed routs were made public earlier this month by the Economic Development Corporation and the Department of Transportation, which are studying the BQX proposal.

As envisioned, the light rail system would run along the waterfront from Astoria in Queens to Sunset Park in Brooklyn. As part of their ongoing public comment process, on Nov. 17, officials from the EDC will review the proposal routes before CB6's transportation committee. The board represents Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook and Park Slope.

The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Miccio Center, located at 110 West 9th St.

EDC spokesman Anthony Hogrebe told Patch this month that the routes aren't final, and are merely designed to help community members way the pros and cons of different transit pathways.

The city is still scheduled to release a more formal feasibility study on the BQX early next year, which Hogrebe said will include an assessment of the system's financing.

On a related transportation note, at the same meeting, officials with the MTA will update the community on their ongoing Sandy restoration and construction work inside the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel.
