Intense, No-Brake Bike Race Coming Back To Red Hook

Spectators can take in the "festival atmosphere." Racers can sign up starting today.

RED HOOK BROOKLYN — The Red Hook Criterium, an intense, no-brake bike race that runs through the borough's streets, is coming back next month.

Spectators will get to take in the unsanctioned race, which usually features its fair share of wipeouts, from the "festival atmosphere" on April 29.

And for any riders who are interested in taking part, registration opened Monday and will run through the end of the week. Click here to sign up.

This will be the 10th year for the bike race in Brooklyn, which is now just one of four stops on an international tour for what a press release called "the world’s premier track bike criterium."

Other race locations include London, Barcelona and Milano.

The 24-lap race takes place on a tight, closed track that features twists and turns for the crowded field. It also runs at night, with the gleaming Manhattan skyline as the backdrop.

"It is like your video game and you're in it," Kacey Manderfield Lloyd, a top women's racer, told CBS News for a feature on the race in 2015. "And somebody crashes and burns, it could be you. Literally."
