Wanted In Red Hook: A $20K Public Art Project

The city is asking for proposals for a public art project that will be funded up to $20,000.

RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — The city is asking for proposals from artists for a public art project in Red Hook that could be funded up to $20,000.

The city's Department of Cultural Affairs, the mayor's office and Councilmember Carlos Menchaca issued a request for expression of interest to create "a temporary public artwork" in the harbor-side neighborhood.

The project has these goals in mind, according to the city:

  • Addresses climate change and sea level rise
  • Engages youth in the design or creative process
  • Educates and inspires residents of Red Hook and the city in era of vast climate change challenges
  • Invites social interaction and shared experience
  • Resonates with people of diverse backgrounds, both within the neighborhood and beyond
  • Is durable and requires little or no maintenance
  • Must be located in an area that is accessible to the public

And possible locations, according to the city, include:

  • Louis Valentino, Jr. Park and Pier (art work cannot be in the water or secured to the pier due to regulatory restrictions, but can sit on the pier)
  • Coffey Park
  • Open concrete area on Halleck and Columbia Street
  • Department of Transportation sites (street medians, triangles)
  • Other privately owned spaces that are open to the public

The city, with the help of a commission of local artists, will choose at least five finalists, who will submit a full proposal for their artwork.

The winners will have their project funded up to $20,000 and the other finalists will receive a $500 honorarium.
