No arrests had been made in the case as of Thursday afternoon, but the NYPD had declared Whigham's death to be a homicide.
According to DNAinfo, Pretty Isaac, Whigham's 36-year-old niece, said her aunt had seven children.
"She was a great person. She was a sweetheart. She wouldn't hurt nobody," Isaac told the news site.
The Miccio Community Center couldn't immediately be reached for comment Thursday morning.
This alleged crime occurred in the NYPD's 76th Precinct.
According to official police statistics, through May 8, major crimes in the 76th were collectively down nearly 19 percent compared to the same time period last year.
One murder had been reported in the 76th through May 8, the same number as during that time period in 2015.
