Great Neck 2013 Summer Camp Guide

With a little less than four months left in the school year, local parents have already started planning for their kids’ summer vacation.

And that means one thing: Summer camp.

To help you decide, Great Neck Patch has compiled this summer camp guide featuring a host of programs in town – and many others from nearby towns – to make the job of picking the one that’s right for your kids a much easier experience.

Brookville:

Name: LIU Post Youth Camps

Type of camp: variety/sports/performing arts

Cost:  Summer Day Camp: $450 - $2,360 until May 1, then $480 - $2,570; Performing Arts Academy: $1,600 till May 1, then $1,800.

Details:  LIU Post offers a one- to eight-week summer day camp for children ages 5 - 16, with children in age-specific groups. Activities include arts and crafts, computers, cooking, dance, drama, music, nature, sports and recreation, and swimming.  The Performing Arts Academy (ages 5 - 17) is a three-week program that challengers campers to perform in a full-sized band, concert choir or become part of the Glee club.

Name: LuHi Summer Programs

Details:  LuHi offers 30 summer programs over eight weeks that are divided into three catagories: All-Round programs (grades pre-kindergarten - 9) for children who want a mix of traditional outdoor camp activities, sports, crafts and more; Arts & Education (grades 2 - 12) for in-depth study of computer science, dance, forensics, theatre and performing arts, and visual arts; Sports Schools (grades 1 - 12, varies by sport) for beginner to advanced athletes from a multi-sport Rookie School and baseball to fencing.

Glen Cove:

Name: North Shore Day Camp

Type of camp: variety/outdoor/sports

Cost: Traditional Camp (Nursery - 4th grade): $4,300 - $7,450; Traditional Camp (grades 5 - 6): $4,550 - $8,075; Voyagers: $4,900 - $8,850.

Details: North Shore Day Camp offers a variety of co-ed summer day programs for children ages 2 ½ to 15. Children are divided into groups by age: Stepping Stones (ages 2 ½ - 5) featuring 30-minute activity blocks including sports, games and swimming; Main Camp (grades 1 - 6) focusing on league sports and club activities; Voyagers (grades 7 - 9) allows teen to mix camp activities and travel.

Name: Robbie Wagner’s Nike Tennis Camp

Details:   The YMCA at Glen Cove offers a variety of camps for children ages 3 - 15 that focus on the outdoors, sports and group activities: Kiddie Camp (ages 3 - 5), Youth Camp (grades 1 - 6), Too Cool for Camp (grades 7 - 9) , Sports Camp (grades 3 - 6), Counselor in Training (age 15 and older). YMCA membership is required to attend.

Great Neck:

Name: Camp Parkwood

Details:  Camp Parkwood offers three summer day camp program for children: Camp Parkwood (grades 1 and up), Tots (ages 4 - 5); Minis (ages 3-4). Camp activities include sports, games, arts and crafts and more. Tots have twice weekly swimming instruction.

Name: Camp Gan Israel

Type of Camp:  recreation/religious

Cost:  $300 per week, or $2,400 for full eight-week session

Details: Camp Gan Israel is a eight-week Jewish summer day camp program for children ages 2 - 12. Camp activities will include swimming on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while younger children enjoy a splash or wading pool. Hot Kosher lunches and snacks are provided.

Locust Valley: 

Name: Friends Academy Summer Camps

Name: Science Museum of Long Island

Details: This science education program offers weekly sessions for eight-weeks for children in nursery school through age 17. Children are divided into groups by age:

Summer Science Experience (grades nursery - 3), Advanced Summer Science (grades 4- 7), Long Island Raiders (grades 4 and up), Assistant Counselor Program (ages 14 - 17)

Long Island Raiders is a travel camp for grades 4 and up to explore Long Island with day and overnight trips. Assistant Counselors allows teens to gain hands-on experience working side-by-side with teachers and counselors.
