Lightning Sparks Fire At Great Neck Village Hall: Fire Chief

Lightning struck Great Neck Village Hall on Tuesday, causing part of the building to go up in flames.

GREAT NECK, NY — Great Neck Village Hall caught on fire after being struck by lightning on Tuesday night, an official said.

About 100 firefighters responded to the blaze on Baker Hill Road around 7:20 a.m.

Great Neck Alert Chief John Purcell said the roof and the second-floor offices were "badly damaged" in the blaze, which firefighters were able to extinguish in about 30 minutes. The bottom floor "suffered significant smoke and water damage."

No one was in the building at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

According to Purcell, Village Hall was built in 1833.
