Huntington Votes to Limit Invasive Bamboo

The Huntington Town Board voted Tuesday to require homeowners to control running bamboo so that it won't spread and damage the property of others. Councilwoman Susan Berland had pushed for the restrictions for more than a year, after hearing horror stories from property owners who had battled the spread of the invasive plant.  Councilman Mark Mayoka joined her and Town Supervisor Frank Petrone in approving the measure.

Historical Society Expands Gallery Space

Until recently, the Oyster Bay Historical Society, established in 1960, was housed solely in the historical Earle-Wightman House on Summit Street in Oyster Bay. Nicole Menchise, archivist and librarian for the Society, explained that over time, it became clear the Society needed to create a separate space for artifact storage, an archive room, a library, as well as a permanent exhibit space.

Nature Center Director: Cicadapocalypse 'Good'

While news that a billion buzzing cicadas are set to emerge in the next few weeks might have many people a bit freaked out, Sweetbriar Nature Center Director Janine Bendicksen said there's a bright side to the Cicadapocalypse. "The cicadas? They're good," she said. "They are going to feed a whole range of animals; birds, rabbits, foxes."

Dairy Queen Looks to Hire 100

Dairy Queen is looking to hire 100 part-time employees as it prepares to open Long Island’s first franchise at the end of May, the owner confirmed to Patch. Franchise owner Laura Maier, 34, of Massapequa, said she’s in the process of remodeling the Sunrise Highway location, site of the former Burger King, and is excited about bringing the DQ brand to Massapequa.

Long Beach Police Prep for Summer Without Boardwalk

Without a full boardwalk in Long Beach this spring and summer after Hurricane Sandy destroyed the original structure last October, more people are expected to take to the city streets to walk, jog and ride their bicycles. For the Long Beach Police Department, this activity comes with heightened safety issues. LBPD spokesman Lt. Eric Cregeen said that while the department is fully aware of these unusual circumstances in the beach town, officers will still take the same basic approach toward patrols and enforcement while the new boardwalk is under construction in the coming months.

Coast Guard Rescues Injured Fisherman

A fisherman off a Montauk fishing vessel was rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter after he severed his finger while out at a sea on Wednesday afternoon. The Coast Guard said it evacuated a 23-year-old Montauk man who was injured while working with fishing gear aboard the 52-foot fishing vessel Sea Smoke.
