Police Release Name of Officer Who Shot Carjacking Suspect

New details emerge from Wednesday's incident in Lake Success and its ties to a Flower Hill robbery; FBI now involved, officials said.

Nassau Police, in conjunction with the Lake Success Police Department, have released the name of the officer who shot a carjacking suspect in Lake Success Wednesday evening.

Police say Richard Petrillo, a 14-year veteran of the Lake Success Police Department, fired three shots striking the suspect twice in one leg and once in the torso.

The suspect, was armed with a gun, according to Newsday, and was believed to have robbed a nearby T-Mobile store in Manhasset, before the attempted carjacking. Nassau Police had alerted Lake Success Police about the robbery and a getaway car, which Lake Success Police spotted on Lakeville Road. Police followed footprints in the snow from the getaway car and came upon the suspect during the attempted carjacking.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He remains in the hospital under federal custody.

The Nassau County Police Department Homicide Squad is investigating the police-involved shooting. The Major Case Bureau along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate this incident. The FBI would not reveal the reason for the agency’s involvement, according to Newsday.

The carjacking may be connected to a robbery at a Manhasset store on Northern Boulevard in Flower Hill, police said Thursday. The suspect’s description lead police to believe that the carjacking and the robbery are related.

Nassau Police said the robbery at the T-Mobile store at 1073 Northern Boulevard occurred at 6:20 p.m. The carjacking occurred shortly after on Lakeville Road in Lake Success.

Nassau Police did not release the name of the wounded suspect.
