Town: $1.4M in Sandy Aid to Benefit Manorhaven Beach Park

FEMA funding to help restore damages sustained during superstorm at North Hempstead park in Port Washington.

The Town of North Hempstead will get $1.4 million in federal funding for repairs at Manorhaven Beach Park in Port Washington, officials said.

The Federal Emergency Management Authority will be provide $1.2 million with an additional $200,000 coming through New York State from the federal HUD Community Development Block Grant funds.

Portions of the park sustained wind damage during Superstorm Sandy. These areas include the tennis court, picnic pavilions, women’s restrooms, main building and ornamental wooden decking in the surrounding park area. Additionally, sections of dock area were broken as well as a concrete boat ramp and seawall, and kayak stands, which are all slated to be replaced with this funding.

“This FEMA grant will help us restore this vital recreational facility at Manorhaven Beach Park,” North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth said, in a statement.

Bosworth said Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand secured these funds through FEMA. The grant will work in conjunction with two existing state grants received by the town last year to rebuild the park’s boat ramp and the neighboring property along North Sheets Creek, bringing a total of $2 million in assistance to the park.

Manorhaven Beach Park features a 25,000-square-foot main pool area with competition and lap swim area, general swim sections, zero depth entry for children and beginners, as well as two giant water slides and state of the art play features and a separate kiddie pool area. The park also provides basketball, newly resurfaced tennis courts, handball, horseshoe pits, and racquetball and bocci courts.

Some of this work has already been completed including the roof on the main building, ornamental wooden deck and bocce court, which the Town will be reimbursed for. Construction on the remainder of these projects is currently in the planning stages.
