Fire Breaks Out At Melville Condo Complex

One cat died in the Tuesday morning blaze, fire officials say.

A cat died from a fire that broke out in a senior condo complex in Melville on Tuesday morning, fire officials say.

The Melville Fire Department responded to The Coves at Melville, located on Morley Circle, for reports of smoke in a second floor unit at 10:54 a.m. Firefighters arrived tot he scene to discover an active fire in the ground floor unit below.

About 40 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which was contained to a rear bedroom, with smoke damage throughout the unit.

There were no injuries reported, but a cat died in the fire.

The Melville Fire Department responded to the scene with three engines, ladder truck, two ambulances and fir police. Units were under the direction of Assistant Chiefs David Kaplan and Bill Schmitt. Mutual aid assistance at the scene was provided by the Huntington Manor, East Farmingdale and Plainview fire departments. Standby crews from the Dix Hills and Farmingdale fire departments handled an ambulance call and a commercial automatic alarm during the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington Fire Marshal, according to PIO Steve Silverman.
