More West Nile Found In Dix Hills

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) reported that it has found an additional mosquito sample in Dix Hills that has tested positive for the West Nile virus. The sample testing positive was collected between August 25 and August 29.

To date this year, 201 mosquito samples and a total of 38 birds have tested positive for the virus across Suffolk.

Health Services Commissioner James L. Tomarken said in order to reduce the possibility of West Nile local residents should eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed and to continue to reduce exposure to mosquitoes whenever possible. The county offers a bulletin entitled “Mosquitoes and Mosquito-borne Illnesses,” which contains tips on personal protection and repellents.

After August 31, the Department of Health Services is no longer collecting and testing dead birds for West Nile virus.  For medical questions related to West Nile virus, call 631-854-0333 during normal business hours.
