Wheatley Heights Man Arrested For Punching Teen During HS Basketball Game: Police

The incident happened during a basketball game at Half Hollow Hills High School West, police say.

DIX HILLS, NY — Suffolk County police arrested a Wheatley Heights man after he allegedly punched a teenage player during a high school basketball game last week.

According to police, Jeffery Vernot, 36, punched a 15-year-old male on the basketball court during a game at Half Hollow Hills High School West on January 8 at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Police said the incident occurred during the game and involved an adult striking a juvenile player.

Vernot was arrested on January 11 and charged with third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. He was issued a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled to be arraigned at a later date.

The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
