"Someone Really Could Have Been Hurt,": Car Crashes Into Laundromat In East Northport: Police

A 69-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle while attempting to park on Friday afternoon, police say.

EAST NORTHPORT, NY — A vehicle crashed into a laundry business along Larkfield Road in Huntington on Friday afternoon, according to police.

Police said a 69-year-old woman was attempting to park a 2022 Honda in front of Laundry Basket, located at 290 Larkfield Road, when she lost control of the vehicle and struck the building at approximately 12:35 p.m. on Jan. 10.

The Town of Huntington Building Inspector was notified due to damage to the vehicle and building, police said. No injuries were reported.

Laundry Basket owner Miguel Velez said the vehicle came through the storefront window after the driver mistakenly pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.

“The lady just hit the gas instead of the brake and came through the window,” Velez said to Patch. “But everybody is OK, and we’re trying to correct the situation.”

Velez said the business remained open following the crash after power was shut off in the affected area as a precaution.

“We were able to close that section, and the town said we could stay open,” he said.

Velez said the crash caused significant damage to the storefront and equipment inside the business, including a large industrial washing machine damaged by debris from the impact. He said repairs will require coordination with insurance companies before work can begin.

Velez, who was inside his office at the time of the crash, said he heard the impact and later learned how close customers had been to the area just moments earlier.

“It was a miracle,” he said. “Two ladies had been sitting there just minutes before. With that force, someone really could have been hurt.”
