Construction At 137th Street Station Nearing Finish Line, Officials Say

HAMILTON HEIGHTS, NY — Accessibility improvements at the 137th Street–City College subway station are on track to be completed by the middle of next year, Councilmember Shaun Abreu told Patch after touring the station with contractors this week.

The elevator on the uptown track is slated for completion in January, while the downtown side is expected to open in the second quarter of 2026, according to the Councilmember’s office.

The MTA also plans to widen the uptown staircase — a change made after feedback from Abreu and the community — to improve pedestrian flow during busy hours.

"The investment in accessibility is a major win for the community," Abreu said. "The new elevators will make the station usable for seniors, parents with strollers, people with disabilities, and anyone who struggles with stairs."

Construction crews will begin shrinking the uptown construction site footprint in mid-November, restoring some sidewalk and street access.

The MTA has also committed to keeping the area clean as work continues, Abreu's office said.

"Improved access means opportunity for a safer and more connected neighborhood. It ensures that everyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can fully participate in community life and access public transit with dignity," Abreu said.
