East Harlem Anti-Hispanic Hate Crime Under NYPD Probe

Police are looking for a man who reportedly punched and shouted anti-Hispanic sentiments to a pedestrian in the neighborhood.

EAST HARLEM, NY - Authorities are looking for a man who reportedly punched and shouted anti-Hispanic sentiments to a pedestrian in East Harlem last month.

A 43-year-old man was walking in front of the Greater Highway Deliverance Temple at 132 East 111 St. about 11:50 p.m. when the attacker made anti-Hispanic statements and then punched the victim in the head, police said.

The attacker fled the area after the punch, police said. The victim was treated at an area hospital for his injuries.

The NYPD's Hate Crime Task Force is investigating this incident.

There have been four hate crime reports in the 23rd precinct in East Harlem thus far in 2023, per NYPD data. It’s a 100% increase from the two hate crimes reported in the same neighborhood last year.
